Abbrook Aces

The good news is we have a new venue to try out for our summer evening sessions.  These will now be held at Stover School (just a little further along the road from the caravan park in the Newton Abbot direction).

The first session will be on Wednesday 3 April 2013 at 6.30 -7.30pm for both groups and will continue fortnightly on:

17 April

1 May & 15 May

(Please note there is no session on 29 May due to the team being involved with the Tour Series on 28 May)

12 June & 26 June

10 July & 24 July

7 August & 21 August

4 September and 18 September

There are various areas of the site which we can use so please bear with us while we try this out and see what works! Some of the circuit will be on grass for the younger group however if it is dry they will be fine on road bikes. There is a tarmac area for the older group and there may be opportunities to use some quiet roads behind the school once we have established ourselves. We are hoping to increase the amount and type of sessions at this site to include mountain biking, cyclo-x and grass track so watch this space..!

You may see some new (and familiar!) faces coaching.  We now have Andy Hill, Sarah Vimes and Beccy Birchill - all having recently undertaken the British Cycling coaching course.

***Apologies for the late cancellation of the Aces sessions on 16 March***

We were advised, whilst setting up for the first session, by a Caravan Club official that they would be carrying out works to the site today.  Despite negotiating to use only half of the circuit we were then told that for insurance purposes we could not continue on their site at all.

On a positive note we can advise that we will be switching to alternate Wednesday evenings from 3 April at 6.30pm at Stover School.  Further details will follow by email.

----------------------------------------------

The following Aces sessions will be held at Stover Caravan Park:

5th January 2013

19th January

2nd February

16th February

2nd March

16th March

The sessions will run from 9.30am to 10.15am for those aged 8-11 and from 10.30am to 11.30am for those aged 12-16.  There will be flexibility on the age bandings depending on ability.

It is anticipated that the first Wednesday night session in 2013 will be on 3 April 2013 at Stover School.  This has yet to be confirmed and an email will be sent out to the Aces mailing list when this has been resolved.  An update will also appear on this page.

*** Potential new attendees ***

Due to the popularity of the sessions it is with regret that we are now operating a waiting list and have raised the joining age to 8.  The Club and coaches are keen to deliver effective and fun sessions but we are being swamped with aspiring Bradley Wiggins and Victoria Pendletons.  Existing Aces under the age of 8 will be allowed to continue to come to the sessions.  Please will you email the Aces section of the Club at mdcc.abbrookaces@gmail.com to go on the waiting list.  If parents turn up without notice, or if they are on the waiting list, at the Aces sessions  then they will be turned away – we are very sorry to do this but it is unfair on those parents who are already on the list.  Priority will be given to siblings already attending the Aces sessions.

We are training up new coaches but the process does take time and we would be grateful for your understanding in this matter.  Please remember that the coaches are voluntary so do not give them grief.  If you would like to assist with the coaching sessions in a formal capacity or even in just assisting a coach then your help would be gratefully appreciated.  We are considering a booking scheme for the future but this may be some time off.  Every session has a maximum number who can take part due to British Cycling restrictions and there is the possibility that anyone (including current members) could be turned away.  Places for each session will be offered to those who are members first and to others on a first come, first served basis.

We will commence Saturday mornings from 29th September 2012 at 9.30am on the rugby field.

The sessions at Stover will run from 9.30am to 10.15am for those aged 8-11 and from 10.30am to 11.30am for those aged 12-16.

And on Thursday I am organising a race at the Westpoint showground near Exeter. Again a club member will be there to assist.

The Abbrook Aces focuses on introducing young people to cycling. In 2006 the Mid Devon realised that unless we took action the club would age and there would be no younger members to keep our traditions alive. We now organise fortnightly training sessions to encourage young people aged 8 to 16 to develop the cycling skills of balance, co ordination, and braking. The emphasis is firmly placed on having fun and enjoying your bike. We now have a number of British Cycling registered coaches who deliver the sessions under the nationally recognised Go Ride banner. The club has also gained Club Mark status (which is the sports councils kite mark for sporting clubs) which recognises that the club is fair and equitable in all its activities and in particular with young people.

Sessions take place in traffic free enviroments to ensure safety at Five Lanes Rugby Pitch (opposite Abbrook Park Sports and Social Club, Strap Lane, Kingsteignton) during the Summer months and at the Stover Caravan Park (near Trago Mills) during the Winter months. During the Summer they take place on a Wednesday evening and during the Winter on a Saturday morning.

We are proud that we have coached over 400 young people in cycle skills and we are now seeing the fruits of our labours as they progress into our youth group, cycling on the open road and participating in cycle races.

Each session costs £2 and if you enjoy yourself and return for more coaching we ask that you become a member of the Abbrook Aces which costs £5, check out the details in membership.

There are sessions planned for Wednesdays at the rugby pitch durning Summer 2013 and dates will be announced in due course:

April 2013 onwards

The above sessions will run from 6.30pm for an hour for all children.
