New member seeks bike !

posted by Andrew Parker   [ updated ]

I am looking to get back into cycling after a very long period of absence from the sport. I need a bike before I do this and I am ideally looking for a second hand model to get me started so to speak.

I am quite tall, 6'3" and therefore will need an extra large frame size of at least 58cm.

I would  be grateful if you could let the members of the mid Devon cycle club know that I am looking. Perhaps there may be some members who are looking to sell their old bikes.

Regatta and Brentor results

posted 25 Aug 2010 03:43 by Andrew Parker

The twelth Paignton Regatta Circuit Race was as hectic as all its predecessors and ended in a bonanza pay day for the riders from the Pendragon/le Col team. This team has been contesting the season long City Centre Races and the experienced gained here showed.
In the opening laps of the Mid-Devon Cycling Club/Colin Lewis Cycles promotion there was a blistering attack by Anthony O'Boyle, Team Torq. The welsh based rider soon had a lead of 200 yards. The Pendragon team were having none of that and responded by chasing him down. The speed that they achieved proved too much for a number of entrants and who were left struggling in the wake of a strung out bunch.
It was not long before the Pendragon pairing of Cornishman Chris Opie and Welshman Rhys LLoyd were away on their own. They shared the first two primes and after about 35 minutes of racing they had lapped the field.
The final prime was contested between Jake Durant of the promoting club, the 2009 winner, and Opie. It was Opie that took the honours.
The lapped riders contested the sprint for third place with James Williams edging out Durant and Pendragon's Jack Adams. Matt Hill, Mid-Devon Cycling Club/Colin Lewis Cycles , was the best junior in eighth spot.
It was then down to Opie and Lloyd to sprint it out for the Henderson Cup with Opie winning it.
Andrew Hitchens, Mid-Devon Cycling Club/Colin Lewis Cycles, fell foul of the regulations govening taking a lap out. He punctured on the far side of the circuit. He changed his wheel with clubmate Mark Dolan but then failed to report this to the pit control. Had he done so he would have been placed sixth. As it was he was ruled to have lost a lap and ended up an unlucky thirteenth.

Brentor Races

The third in a series of four was a lively affair. One of the early attackers on the five mile circuit covered 10 times was Matt Hill, Mid-Devon Cycling Club/Colin Lewis Cycles.  Once he was caught it was the turn of Jake Durant to attack. No sooner had Durant been caught than Hill was away again. This time he had Blake Pond, South Fork Racing, and Junior Heffernan, Revo Racing for company.  This trio stayed clear for a number of circuits but at Pitland Corner Heffernan overcooked it and slid off.
This coincided with an attack from the bunch by Hitchens. He soon caught Heffernan and the two pairs fought to keep clear of an ever aggressive bunch. In the end the bunch swallowed them up and it was down to the final attacks.
The one that succeeded was a trio of Chris Opie, Gary Chambers, South Fork Racing, and undeterred by his earlier exploits, Hill. They finished in that order. James Willimas was fourth edging out Hitchens.
Mid-Devon Cycling Club/Colin Lewis Cycles' juniors Brennan Townshend and Nick Avery finished tenth and thirteenth respectively.

The supporting race for fourth category riders was won by Jason Poore, Mid-Devon Cycling Club/Colin Lewis Cycles from Andy Gray, YOGi Cycling.

Plymouth Corinthian CC 50 mile time trial.

The brisk northerly wind did not deter Simon Edney, North Devon Wheelers, from setting a course record for the Buckfasleigh based course. Edney who went through 25 miles in 53 mins 7 secs won with a time of 1 hour 50 mins 25 secs. This clipped 1 minute 38 seconds from Sean Childs' record set in 2007.
Ian Deakin was the fastest rider from the Mid-Devon Cycling Club/Colin Lewis Cycles Team in 2 hrs 7 mins 3 secs. This was 54 secs faster than Stephen Dart.

Dartmoor Classic 2010 – Didn’t we do well!!!

Formerly the promoter of the Dartmoor Classic, in its first 3 years, my changed duties this time allowed me the opportunity of getting a close-up overview of the 4th edition of this fantastic event and what I saw absolutely blew me away. The experience was also quite an emotional one, with waves of pride washing over me as I witnessed what we, the Mid-Devon, have created. Tasked with providing  some on-the-road rider support;  handing out much needed additional water, providing a little mechanical service and ferrying the odd casualty back to the finish, I quickly realised why many now rate this as the best sportive in the country.

Leaving the now relatively calm and quiet Depart Village, soon after the first few hundred riders had set off, I headed out on the route. Within a couple of miles I passed through the first T junction, where 3 marshals, no less, were red-flagging groups of riders safely through. Another couple of miles on, another tricky spot, and another smiling face pointing the way. At the roundabout in Bovey Tracey, another 3 happy souls were on duty in the early morning sunshine. This level of support was repeated on all the sections of the route I covered and it was mighty impressive. Had the marshals not been at all the key points, the riders’ progress would not have been as safe and smooth, but the volume and positioning of high visibility route signs would certainly have kept most on-course. Given that each rider was also provided with a detailed route card, there could be no excuse for getting lost.

Arriving in Princetown, I was greeted by what must be the slickest and most bountifully stocked feeding station of any major U.K. event.  The selection of food and drink was very impressive, with one wag saying it was “like the deli counter at Waitrose”. Those manning the tables and organising the drinks were working flat-out to satisfy the constant stream of thirsty and hungry participants. Nearby, and with a gazebo protecting them from the blistering sun, bike mechanics were busy sorting out problems.

Meanwhile, out on the course, motto marshals, from the National Escort Group, were darting here and there to direct operations at problem points where riders had crashed or where they could act as outriders and help protect them or generally make oncoming traffic aware of the cyclists’ approach.

Now back in Kingsteignton the Depart Village had burst into life, with 100km riders arriving in ones and twos or small groups. With bands playing and spectators thronging the finish area, it was a big carnival atmosphere that greeted the participants. A quick dismount then parking their bikes in the secure bike pen, the riders were rewarded with a very slick deregistration procedure which presented them with their granite trophy, medal and commemorative musette.

The result of all this was phenomenally positive rider feedback, which repeatedly rated it the U.K’s best ever sportive. The club’s members, supporters, families and friends can be justifiably proud of what they have collectively achieved. Those who worked tirelessly ahead of the event know who they are, as do those who supported them on the weekend. Those who did not help, yet benefit from what the club is able to provide, as a result of the event, also know who they are and perhaps will now volunteer their assistance for the next edition. So, roll-on next year, when the club take the event further forward and we maintain our position as promoters of the country’s premier mass participation sportive. To all who contributed to this year’s success, thank you so much; it makes me very proud to be a member of the MDCC, arguably the best cycling club in Britain
